ROOZ GTPES Success!!
Posted on Monday 26th October at 9:24 PM

After a long, and hard fought championship battle, RaceOnOz Racing have become GTPlanet GT300 World Champions. With 2 wins at Brands Hatch and Suzuka, it took an epic, come from behind effort to snatch the championship at Spa.

Round 1: Bathurst 12 Hour

As the team had not been formed, ROOZ took no part in this double points race. Swift Autosport came away with the victory in a team that featured X-WTF-MAN-X, winning by 2 laps from Lightning Speed Motorsport.

Round 2: 4 Hours of Tsukuba

With the #67 entry of GTORacing becoming vacant, ROOZ member N64TheStig007 (aka Jono) took the chance to apply for the seat. The Subaru BRZ was now a ROOZ car, with the traditional striking bright orange as the livery. Jono's teammate for the first event would be Mustafur.

Jono scored pole for the race by 2 tenths, however the team would be forced to start from the pits as Mustafur failed to attend the qualifying session as a rookie driver. Starting nearly 2 laps down, taking the win seemed improbable.

Jono scythed his way through several slower TCN-1 cars and overtook each of the GT300's to put ROOZ on the lead lap. By the driver change, ROOZ was in 2nd place having overtaken ORA Racing and Swift Autosport for position.

With Mustafur now at the wheel, he had to pass the Lightning Speed RX7 to take the win. However, he copped a stop and go penalty for exploiting track limits, handing the race to LSM. Their utilisation of a local driver change gave them a lap's advantage which could not be overhauled. 2nd from the pit lane was still a fantastic result on debut, with Swift in 3rd.

Round 3: Japan 12 Hour (Twin Ring Motegi) (2X points)

With the next race only a week after, several of potential ROOZ drivers were in Queensland for GTAcademy National finals. Despite this, ROOZ's four man team of Mustafur, pykeybraa, SickSkillz and TDZDave was still one of the strongest teams in GT300. A new team had joined, Endurance Experience, lead by fellow roozers Beau Albert and Seth123. Following problems with photography, Jono was drafted in to replace pykey, giving up pole position once again.

This didn't faze Mustafur, who shot to the lead immediately and raced away. However, with just two laps to go before pitting, Mustafur disconnected from a 50 second lead, and fell 3 laps down. A bitter blow, but Mus fought back to hand the car to Jono just 2 laps back. Jono drove hard all stint, and apart from being lagged off by the LSM RX7 and taken out by the Swift BRZ, Jono's stint brought ROOZ back to just over 1 lap down. Sadly though, in the impending driver change, TDZDave's PS3 froze, costing the team several laps. Mustafur charged hard for one more hour before a red flag hit.

The rain had hit as well, and despite Dave and Konnor's flawless stints, ROOZ were out of contention. Still, after all the troubles, 3rd was remarkable. Lightning Speed took another victory, with a fantastic 2nd for Endurance Experience on debut. Swift finished last, giving LSM the lead in the championship.

Round 4: 4 Hours of Brands Hatch

After missed opportunities in Japan, the team struck gold at Brands Hatch. The team headed into this round with the knowledge Lightning Speed Motorsport would be barred from competing in the season finale. With warrior2167 joining Jono and Mustafur, the opposition didn't stand a chance. Jono put in the lap of his life and took pole by nearly 4 tenths of a second, but sacrificed his shot at the driver's title due to poor internet, and did not race.

Mustafur maintained the lead after Seth spun out at turn 3, and despite early pressure from the GTMX Lexus, Mustafur raced away and never looked back. A safety car came at the best possible time and ROOZ went a lap up, but the ORA car gained a lap too. The car continued on peerlessly and once warrior jumped in to replace Mustafur with a lap and a half lead, it was game over.

Warrior hadn't heard the memo about cruising, by the time he crossed the line to take a truly dominant win, he was nearly 3 laps up. It was the first win for RaceOnOz, and it was done in perfect style. With Endurance Experience 3rd, Lightning Speed 4th and Swift 6th, it was all good news in the championship stakes.

Round 5: Suzuka 1000kms (2X points)

If Brands Hatch was dominant, then Suzuka was a total decimation. Despite an unchanged lineup, the RaceOnOz BRZ was not on pole, with the Lexus IS350 coming into its own in qualifying, with Dragon Razor Racing taking pole position. Following poor pace, both Lightning Speed and Endurance Experience were given a 10bhp boost before the race. DRR earned a post qualifying penalty, starting 30 seconds behind.

Warrior simply sped away from the field to give the car to Mustafur in perfect shape. Despite an early incident, Mus drove peerlessly while the rest of the field fell off. Handing the car back to warrior 3 laps to the good, he drove to perfection to earn a 2nd victory in a row.

Endurance Experience scored another 3rd place, with Lightning Speed 4th and Swift 5th. ORA were forced to retire following connection issues. The title was now a straight fight between ROOZ and Swift for the title, but Endurance Experience could still take the title if a miracle occurred at Spa.

Final Round: 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps (4X points)

The team headed into the final round full of confidence. With this round being worth quadruple points, we needed to merely finish ahead of Swift to win the championship. S54VED, fresh after a win in the ROOZ TCN-1 car in the London 12 Hour, joined the assault in Belgium. He and Jono would team up to race together at his house.

Jono took another pole position, and all looked set for the race. However, protests from the Dragon Razor Racing team meant the Lexus' were handed a 5bhp boost for the race, a move which would see those cars become faster overall, as the BRZ struggled in colder air. Endurance Experience suffered a terrible session despite switching to boxer power from a rotary and started last.

Jono lead the field in S54VED's uncomfortable rig, and sped off to a 20 second lead. All was going swimmingly, until the sun began to set. Suddenly the car lacked pace, and Filo in the DRR Lexus began to close in.

The pair had a wonderful battle, until Jono came into the pits from the lead to hand S54VED the car. On Jono's G27, he struggled bigtime, and after DRR made their driver change, ROOZ had lost the lead. Swift had hit trouble with StigsTC being given a black flag for lag, S54VED just needed to concentrate on keeping it on track. He pressed on, getting faster and faster, before a disconnection at the 4hr, 10min mark. This was huge, and cost the team more than 3 laps. Meanwhile Endurance Experience were having a torrid race, and their title chances were already wiped out following Famine's kneecap popping and several disconnections. Swift were now over a lap to the good.

S54VED soon handed back to Jono. In a fairly smooth run, he handed the car to Warrior at the 8.5 hour mark. Warrior demonstrated why he is truly one of the world's best GT6 drivers with an awesome stint, bringing us back in contention with Swift. S54VED was raring for another go, this time with his Fanatec. He performed admirably, getting faster and more consistent. Handing over to Mustafur, his stint was marred by a default setup glitch and 2 penalties, one for 4 warnings and the other for being caught up in a collision with Swift's Dangerzone when trying to pass. In a disastrous stint, ROOZ was staring at 8 laps down and even worse, losing the championship with Swift 3 laps ahead...

Warrior to the rescue. He knew he had to give it absolutely everything he had, and did so brilliantly. It was he that recovered more than 2 laps in 4 hours through fast and calculated driving. However, upon making a move on DRR's Sk8er at Les Combes, contact was made and Warrior suffered damage. He was furious and made his feelings clear with a bombardment of flashing lights. Pitting for repairs, not even a minute afterwards, the red flag was flown for a full lobby disconnection with 4hrs and 30mins to go. That pitstop was vital for determining ROOZ's position. Overall we were now back on the same lap as Swift, at the time.

Mustafur took the restart just behind Dangerzone, as Warrior only had 10mins of total stint time left at the time of the green, with 3hrs and 40 mins left. On the parade lap, a lag incident between the two rivals meant they had to stop for repairs, helping Dragon Razor out enormously.

Mustafur had to keep up with Dangerzone, but he broke free. Desperation was setting in in the ROOZ camp, with no more driver changes to be made, only a new hourly update or a mistake could promote the ROOZ team ahead of Swift. And so it proved, with the 22 hour update showing that the RaceOnOz Racing #67 BRZ had pulled off the mother of all comebacks. ROOZ was now a lap ahead of Swift. Dangerzone was forced into limp home mode after encountering the black screen glitch, eliminating all hope Swift had of retaking 2nd place from ROOZ. A crash later on sealed the deal.

After 24 hours of racing, Dragon Razor Racing won the race by 3 laps. Meanwhile, Dangerzone limped across the line to take 3rd. Endurance Experience were a distant last in a valiant effort. Mustafur however, did all he needed to do to cross the line in 2nd place, which was enough for RaceOnOz Racing to become the 2015 GTPlanet Endurance Series GT300 World Champions, and for Mustafur to become the GT300 Driver's Champion!

In the end, after participating in 5/6 rounds, RaceOnOz Racing were 1st on 170 points, 8 ahead of Swift Autosport. Dragon Razor Racing's win moved them all the way to 3rd on 142 points. Lightning Speed Motorsport clung onto 4th on 135 points. Endurance Experience's disastrous race nailed them down in 5th on 106, 8 ahead of ORA Racing. Overall, an incredible season with a fairytale ending against all odds. For 2016, the team will look to use the championship as a catapult into a new challenge, hoping to continue to charge a bright orange machine to the chequered flag.

Cheers, Jono (RaceOnOz Racing Team Manager)
