Absolutely pumped to have scored my maiden podium in Division 1 on arguably the most difficult track in the game.
I may have surprised everyone by scoring an incredible pole, I was 2 tenths up on warrior's pole time heading into Massenet, but unfortunately the race countdown began, forcing me to be contempt with a still marvelous 4th.
Off the line, I followed Mustafur up the inside as he got ahead of warrior. I could not do the same, but rotor and I were side by side heading up towards Casino Square. He got up the inside, but I dived up at Massenet and re took 3rd. I knew if I could hang onto warrior I was in the box seat for a good position. Sadly I clipped the wall at Tabac and my chances of a win were over. My focus soon turned to making rotor and Anon's nights miserable. I was holding onto 3rd for dear life. Thankfully, I was able to pull away from their battle, but was unable to catch warrior and Mustafur, who were in a league of their own. I was happy to sit where I was.
Into the pits on lap 12, I had hoped to get a clear run through here, as rotor was stuck behind Anon and tried to undercut him. But of course, my luck with pit stops will never change and rotor had managed to nullify the 5 second gap I built up. Anon came off worse though, he was down in 7th!
Rotor was now hungry for the podium. He was clearly faster than me, and my defending got quite desperate. Natman tried but failed to no stop, and soon was an obstacle for us into the Nouvelle Chicane. It was quite scary, though on destroyed tyres natman found himself in the wall. Rotor was applying the pressure, a top notch battle. Unfortunately, a wall bump under braking for the Casino Square let him through. I was frustrated to have thrown away a podium, perhaps my only shot this season. Warrior, who got the jump on Mustafur, sadly disconnected with victory in sight.
Mustafur now had a 21 second lead, and could now cruise. Rotor meanwhile, with just 4 laps to go, dropped it out of the Nouvelle chicane, and I WAS THROUGH INTO SECOND PLACE! With an imaginary Murray Walker screaming in my head, it was all about bringing the car home. Rotor fought back, closing the gap, but suffered oversteer at Nouvelle and the Swimming Pool, sealing the deal with a fabulous 2nd place.
After quali, I still thought I'd lose positions to the fast boys. But to come away from the round as runner up was just incredible. Yeah, I inherited it and got a little bit of luck (which is IMO odd), it doesn't take away the elation. All of a sudden, I'm now pumped after being quite deflated after Tokyo. Bring on the sprint round!
Cheers, Jono.
