    The Rome Rundown..

Really enjoyable round for me tonight. From pre race practice and qualifying I was feeling really confident and on top of my game. Lots of ups and downs in race 2.

    Practice/Qualifying.
As usual, pre race practice was a bit of a "feeling out" session. Trying to work out who was quick, and exactly how quick.
My best lap in prac was 1:18.3xx. I found another .3 in qualifying to take pole with a 1:18.08x. I wasn't sure where Paulie and Koastr were running at this stage so I just pushed hard for the full session.

    Race 1.
I got off to an average start and had to defend against Paulie and Koastr for the first couple of laps. After shaking Paulie and Koastr off my slipstreem I was able to smash out some quick and consistent laps which made it virtually impossible for the others to catch me. While Paulie and Koastr were jostling for position the grin on my face was getting bigger. I was brimming with confidence. Finished the race with a 9 second lead from Koastr. The race between 2nd and 3rd must have been intense.

    Race 2.
Reverse grid. I was looking forward to this. But I copped a 4.5 second false start penalty, I was too busy fiddling with my brake bias adjustments and failed to keep the brake on. Laughed it off and set off about catching the pack. I breathed a sigh of relief when I came to turn 5 and found Paulie nose first into the wall. I'm not sure exactly what happened here but I think overtaking attempts at turn 5 are simply outrageous. Its a Single line turn. I think overtaking here is disrespecting your opponent. Anyway.... So before I knew it I was up into third and hunting down Koastr for the win. We had a great battle for 3 or so laps before Koastr missed a braking marker crashing us both. Very gentlemen like he redressed. This brought Paulie back onto our tails and Koastr and he fought it out to the finish much like race one and I was able to take advantage of there squabbling to bolt for another race win.
Congrats to Koastr for second place for the round. Bad luck to Paulie, It looks like the div 1 championship is going to come down to the final round..Great, looking forward to it.

I was a little underprepared this week, with not much experience on the track I needed to put more practice in.
I found over a second in quali but it was still only good enough for 5th in the first race never enough and I fought for the whole 11 laps, I finally got in front with a couple of laps to go but he got a run on me after I was far too cautious through the dog leg on the final lap. Had to settle for fifth.

In the second race all was going well until I outbraked myself into the wall, my race was pretty much over then and I came home a lonely 6th.

Had great fun though, bring on the final race.

    My recap:
Had no practice during the week, and when it got to prac/quali I struggled to put a whole lap together. I was searching and searching for a brake marker for the tight right-hander (turn 4). Perhaps it was just my driving, but I thought the grip around there was very inconsistent; some laps my brake point seemed too early, other laps it was too late; really found that corner difficult.
I found getting even slightly off line anywhere on this track would ruin your lap. Nice track, but tricky.

    Race 1 - 6th
Hanging onto the back of the pack behind Outta, Never_enough and Natman I never really had the opportunity, or pace, to make a move. Outta and Never skipped away leaving me and Natman. He was getting real out of shape on a number of occasions, and I was able to sneak past on into the final turn a few laps from the end. Was then able to keep natman behind me.

    Race 2 - 4th
2nd place on the grid, but had an average first lap which dropped me back a bit. Too far back to see what happend up ahead, but came around the right-hand kink to find natman perpendicular to the driving line. Replay should be interesting there.
Ultimately the quicker guys got past me and I had a hard charging Never_enough behind me who had me defending for a number of laps. Final lap on the drag down to the right-hand kink him and I were side-by-side. It could have got messy but I had the line on the left and Never was gentlemanly enough to back out of it, so props to him for clean racing. Was able to hold him off through the last few turns.

Nurburgring next... Gulp  And what I think will probably be my last showing in Div 1.
Going to take maximum concentration to keep it on the track there for 7 laps.

After racing on my lonesome for the last few rounds, last night was a refreshing change. Had a great dice with Outta in Race 1, real high intensity stuff lol, and after spending most of Race 2 trying to get up to the back of Flood, we were side by side going into the right hand dog leg on the last lap as Flood said, but I backed off as I felt we had both driven a good race and it wasn't worth one or both of us ending up in the wall. Last night reminded me of why I joined the league - close, clean racing with a great bunch of guys. Looking forward to the last round and then onto season 4 with BIGGER grids.

Looking forward to this too. Also wouldn't mind the reintroduction of stickier tyres that don't last a whole race. Brings a bit more variety into the races.

Great stuff guys. Glad to see it was an enjoyable round for all with less 'lonesome' laps than usual! Some of the most instense racing I've done actually. I think the shorter format adds to this as there's less time for the pack to spread out, but less time to recover if you make an error too!

This track was very unfamiliar to me so I put in a good couple of hours practice Sunday and found some reasonable pace.
Was pretty pleased to get 1:18.4xx in my final practise session. But like Floodsim I was unsure about break markers into turn 4 even into the first race and I couldn't quite match practice pace in quali. I wasn't too bad on the outside where I had the shadows, but if I tried to defend the inside line I found myself without a break marker and approaching gingerly until race 2 where I identified one of the nice high PD signs on the inside of the track that I could use for either line. I was pleased with my race pace and consistency, putting in some mid 1:18's without slipstream and under pressure.

Race 1 was a game of cards shuffling positions with Paulie all the way. It was very interesting with the variation in lines and nice wide track through T1 (right handers) and I really had my break marker nailed for that one. My preferred line was slightly wide so even when Paulie got up the inside I was able to power down and we would stay side-by-side all the way through the corner. Very fun, but Paulie I think sometimes you didn't realise I was maintaining a nose-to-nose position and you'd squeaze me out with a bump on corner exit.

Race 2 was also pretty exiting. Got a great start off the grid and was lucky to scrape around an early pile up. A few laps later I had the lead and some good pace, not enough to stop Beau catching up, especially with some others to slingshot off, but perhaps enough to defend for the win. Beau and I had some great fun laps there and I was still optimistic I could pull a win until an incident at the dog leg. My brake marker was a shadow on the track. Just beside Beau and about to pull in behind him, his car blocked my view of the marker area and I axed Beau into the wall. . Here I was torn. We had a gap on Paulie but not much. I decided to make a clear redress then and there so there was no confusion or hard feelings. Unfortunately I over did it a bit stopping completely as Beau took longer to recover than I expected. Beau got away, and Paulie was right back to put the pressure on again. In heinsite probably would have been better to redress on the home straight. Paulie and I swapped positions again a few times, and after some tense moments I was pleased to come away with another 2nd.

Personally I thought the slipstream was pretty mild. But It works both ways Paulie. I'm pretty sure there were moments there where I put together some great sectors and got a gap and good exit speed onto the straights where without the slipstream I would have got away from you too. Not to mention the punt into the wall from behind you gave me at the dog leg without redress race 1. I noticed a bit of frustration in your driving and copped a few more dubious bumps especially in race 2. Anyway, that's racing and we had some very enjoyable and intense battles there, some of my most fun racing this season. Cheers.

I forgot to save race 1 replay. I'll download a copy when Outta uploads (really keen to view it :p ) it but until then I won't be able to post results.

Really looking forward to next week. Endurance + nurburg 24hr + Tamora + sport hards is going to be a ball IMO.

+1 Bigger grids and less durable tyres will be a nice change into next season.

Mate I've been having a niggling problem with my DFGT wheel lately that has been causing this. I was getting really inconsistent braking into turns. I cottoned onto it though...My pedals were having calibration issues and my throttle was intermittently sticking open slightly, Maybe 20% or so.

I've had similar trouble with my brake pedal sticking on at times too. You'll probably tell me you use a pad. :D

I don't recall ever punting you in to a wall, if I did I'm sorry for that. The only times you got away from me was from a wall hit or being off line from an overtake, normally both at the same time. My line at turn 1, the narrow line, is from much experience the best line to take, it gives you a much better exit speed but when someone is beside you in a low grip car like this you can't utilise any of that speed because you have to lift off almost immediately to take the left hander. For turn 3 it's much a case of the best line to take is easily dive bombed and overtaken, and yes there was a huge amount of frustration in my driving. I know Beau was feeling good but I really felt I had the pace to catch him, being unable to shake you meant I stood no chance at the championship.

Beau I don't know what you mean when you say it will come down to the final round, you've already won it unless you don't show up.

Paulie...who's saying I don't get Disconnected from the race. Or run off track and finish poorly. It's not over until it's over in my book. Chin up.

I wouldn't want you to get a disconnect and certainly wouldn't wish it upon you, that'd be a severely hollow victory despite it being a hollow loss since I felt we could have gone toe to toe til the very last corner of the very last lap of the very last round of the very last "YOU GET THE POINT!" in terms of the championship. 2nd place still isn't bad in what is a fantastically run series, I only remembered today that the reasons I had for desperately wanting to win are no longer valid, and yeah last night I was frustrated, as Koastr said he noticed it in my driving, I don't consider our battle to have been a good one since we both had moments of discourtesy towards each other as non-malicious as those moments may have been.

But now the next round is upon us, I have a question. How will quali work? It's going to be tedious because we'll have to just cruise around the track for ~15mins to protect our tyres before getting just one good crack at a lap time, not that the result will matter much as we'll have well over one hour to make up for it in the race, and anyone near enough will do well of Nurb's massively long straights thanks to slipstream. We should have a strict no blocking rule on straights because on Nurb's narrow track it'd be too costly in such a hugely long race to have an incident, race and let race. There's almost not much point to practice, maybe one lap to get a general feel for the track, but conditions will change hugely at night or with rain, and you'll never perfect a lap of this rediculous course. How do you guys consider yourselves at Nurb?

Perhaps I will still have a go at season 4, there are plans in the making for TT-R to launch a two pronged attack on this series.

Here's a collection of photo's I took from the Rome round.

    Race 1.
Paulie got off to a cracker start and was piling on the pressure through turns 1 and two. Paulie was also under siege from koastr in 3rd.

Lap 1, the first run into the illusive turn 4 braking zone. All was kept very clean here. Paulie showed me a wheel on the apex but I was able to hold position down the following straight and into turn 5. Koastr, Never_enough and natman all sniffing around ready to pounce. :D

Lap 1, We all file into the notorious turn 5 beautifully.

Koastr and Paulie go head to head like this for the remainder of the race. It was good to watch.

    Race 2.

My start looked something like this.....what else could I do but laugh at myself

Natman and Paulie's little coming together at turn 5....well...lets not go there..

An early battle between Outta, NeverEnough,Koastr and floodsim... It all looks pretty tight through there...Someone lurking in the background.

The battle between Koastr and I looked something like this...

Koastr out of shape side by side in the fastest bend on the track...awesome ^^^

You got some great pictures there, and lap 1 race 1 was fairly beautiful racing. The natman incident picture in race 2 captures my frustration perfectly, I was ahead, I had more pace, the move should have been awarded to me and natman probably should have pulled out, and yet there I am absolutely sandwiched against the wall with nowhere to go but crashville.

Edit: I'm actually surprised by some of your driver shots, when I've tried something similar in the past the car normally magically disappears from the shot. :?

Yep thats how qualy was in season 2. But you could do 2 laps then, but the second lap was pointless because your tyres are shot.

bring on the final round....then bring on season 4....provided the car choice is a little more exciting.

Great photo's Beau! I love the bueatiful single file shot, and two side-by side helmets shot - a real sense of "close enough to see the whites of their eyes / look over an wave with a silly expression" kind of moments!

And you're race 2 start shot  classic

Love the front page Season 3 pre-final synopsis whoever wrote that up. Nice work.

cant change usb ports as there joined to the board, no matter how good at soldering, means i have to get new board, sony charges flat rate of $250 for all repairs including courier to and from, not all bad news though, one usb port has completely died but the other one doesnt seem too bad, sprayed a little contact cleaner in there and allowed to dry and it has come good mostly, I've played a few hours the last few days and its only played up twice, and last night it didnt play up at all, so if everyones cool with it I'll try the last round, if it plays up well :):):):) happens! cheers for the help boys

Good to have you back infidel.

Paulie, quali is basically a 1 lap shootout, last season I made a mistake in front of beau and stuffed his qual lap, so be aware of that when you begin your lap, need to leave some big gaps here, i would expect the field to be separated by a good 10 seconds +.

Overtaking is very tricky, so make sure you choose your moment carefully. You should never be "blocking" anyone at this track or others, you can drive defensively but no swerving all over the track to prevent someone passing you. I don't want to see people squeezing others off the track once they are alongside you. As a general rule of on track manners you should only move once to protect your position. Remember it's a long race so sometimes it may be better to let someone past rather than send both of you into the wall.
