Yep the 7820X seems to be the sweet spot (8 cores, 16 threads). Looks like it'll be about $830-$850 here in Aus. The 7900 is 10 core, not 18 core. Those higher core CPU's will have slower Single-threaded performance, which at least for the short term, it still important for gaming. My current PC is running a i5 3750K (2012), which has always annoyed me due to how mediocre it feels compared to my previous extreme Q9550 all the way back from 2008. It's well and truly time to upgrade this year.

The 7800X is $300 cheaper than the 7820X but
    1) performs a fair bit worse in various benchmarks
    2) doesn't seem to feature enough PCI-E lanes (particularly if M.2/PCI-E based storage takes off over next few years)
    3) Is only a tad cheaper than the Ryzen 1800X CPU which is probably a better option around that price point.

I went from the i7 3930K bought in 2013 to the i7 7700K recently... got a good run out of it... sadly bought the i7 7700k just before the AMD bought out their CPU's and Intel was forced to bring down their price to compete... Some you win some you lose... :coffee:

Yep I bought a Titan X in 2015 not long before the 980 Ti was announced, and then got stung again when not too long later the 1070 was matching its performance.

    I meant the 7980XE, 18 cores, 36 threads.

They are basically E5-2600 Xeons (which go up to 22 cores) with ECC memory capability disabled. Lots of cores is very handy if you need to run virtual machines, but won't help much with gaming until people actually start building games to take advantage of them more.

Time for upgrading my GPU from the Sapphire HD6970 and looking for recommendations, probably in the under $500 range. The AMD RX series seem to be better spec in this price range than the nVidia GTX10 series? Either way most local suppliers don't seem to keep stock but supply to order.

1070 apparently comparable to the 980ti... I'm not up to date on the AMD cards.
I've always worked on 24months between upgrading GPU and 42-48months CPU.
Providing you bought near latest at the time...

Been doing a bit more research and there isn't much out there! Looks like a 1060, stretching in to the $600s for a 1070, or deferring for a few months  are best options.

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=graphics card
Thinking of going for the MSI GTX 1070 Armor OC?

    FYI motherboard and CPU is: Asus P8Z68-V Z68 LGA1155 motherboard, i5 2500k.

@Ryzza5 would appreciate your thoughts :) (and anyone elses)

The usual method is to pick a few favourites from benchmarks like this, then research 2 or 3 a bit closer until you find your winner (within budget)

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html (search for more benchmarks from other sites to see if the graphics cards you are comparing are consistently in the same order)

HN isn't really the first (or fifth) place I'd go shopping for PC components though. Are you in Melbourne?

    General tips:
Don't buy Quadro. And don't buy 2 slower graphics cards for SLI when you can buy 1 fast card, which is better in the real world.

'Cheaper' powerful graphics cards are supposedly sold out because people are buying them to mine Bitcoins and the like.

I haven't followed AMD graphics cards that closely in recent years so you'll have to check those benchmarks and price lists to see if they can outdo something like the nVidia 1060 or 1070. AMD might be hotter/noisier and consume more electricity for the same performance. This would be a bigger deal if running 24/7 in someone's bedroom, for instance.

    Thanks for the tips.
Was looking at GTX 1060, GTX 1070, or RX580 as main candidates being reasonable upgrades to the HD6970 without spending too much. Can't find the RX580 in stock anywhere.
I am in WA and the usual places I would go either are high priced or out of stock (bit coins like you said) so yea was also surprised that HN was in the range of $50-$100 cheaper than other sources e.g. most 1070's are $750ish where they are in stock elsewhere.

Gota ask, as i cant build computers, is there a company i can buy one from which will run the top specs for the most demanding games, or do these have to be custom built....im not sure but doesnt look like the Harvey Norman gaming range will cut it. Also if i was to go the PC way i would like to to be able to run VR aswell.

Probably will want something with a 1080 or 1080 Ti if you want the best VR experience. Here are a few pre-built systems that will probably be better value than Harvey Norman.

The shops where we buy components from also sell already-built systems at various performance (price) levels. I'd personally shop there before HN. Most offer a suitable warranty. Which city are you in?
