So I've got more of a what to buy question.
Here's the deal, I've got a 05 Subaru Outback. I kinda need a car like that for moving around mountain bikes and camping gear. Thing is it is I am bored with it and its getting to the age where I need to get something else while I can still get some value for a trade.
What I want is something more fun to drive when I drive it on the weekends (missus has it during the week). So I looked at WRX, Golf GTI, Ford ST/RS, VW R wagon (to pricy), Mini Coop S. Most of which get ruled out because they are to small to put a bike in or to put a tow hitch on (and I have an irrational dislike of roof racks :) ). Maybe I could put a tow hitch on a mini, I haven't confirmed that yet.
I've got about 30k I can spend and I am going to have to compromise. Missus has veto'ed utes so my options are getting limited.
So I am now back looking at '11 Forester XT or S editions (and hoping I can find one that hasn't been flogged).
Can any one think of what else I could consider?

Try putting your wife behind the wheel of one of the utes as mine said the same, wouldn't drive one. Until that is we took it away over Xmas and she got around to driving it whilst her car was stuck at home for a month. She confided in me yesterday that her car feels small (Ford Territory) and weird after driving the Colorado for so long. I offered to trade he car in for one when I got mine in June but she turned me down saying she'd rather wait on a deal on a SUV, now she said she'd take one. Too late woman. Offer expired!

The Skoda Octavia (and the Scout) are great alternatives to the Subarus.

I can confirm that the Golf GTi and WRX are both a hoot to drive, but wouldn't fit your bike stuff I would think. That said you would be surprised what you can fit in a 4 door hatch back so at least give the GTi a look
Not interested in a Holden sport wagon or similar? My mum has the Calais V8, nice to drive but I don't particularly like it in the corners so I would avoid a Calais if you want some corner fun, it's not bad but it's built for comfort more I think.

Not really much more on the market I can think of, my work mate has a Volvo wagon turbo thingy, which is pretty quick but costs him thousands in repairs. DON'T BUY A JEEP!
