Just wondering how many people use a controller vs wheel? Also if controller, do you use X and O buttons or R2 and L2 or even right stick? I use controller and i tried the R2 and L2 but found that its uncomfortable to do it that way and also not analogue enough (even though it's more analogue than X and O, its not a big enough difference to me to make it preferable), so am using X and O. Its not the best for RWD, but will see how this season goes.
I use the controller. My set-up is a bit weird. I use the right stick for accel, and L2 trigger for brake. R1 is gear up, and square is gear down. Call me "odd", but it works for me (as per avatar...lol). Hate the DS3 controller, my hands are too big, and (like you said) the buttons/triggers aren't analogue enough. Will get a wheel one day, until then, I'll just stick with the config above.
I use a DS3, wouldn't mind a wheel but i don't have the room to set one up. I also have Real Triggers ($4 at Game) on the L2 & R2 for a better feel, other than that this is my button config. L2 Brake R2 Accel L1 Rear View R1 Lights Left Stick Steering Right Stick Left/Right View Triangle Reverse Square Hand brake O Gear Up X Gear Down
wheel for me, used controller previosuly on gt games and enhoy the game so much more with a wheel, can pull better lap times but not by a big margin.
I use a DF GT, no idea if I do better with the Controller or with the wheel, but Wheel is WAY more fun, so thats what I stick with.
I use the controller, as my wheel doesnt work with GT5 (Fanatec Porsche wheel... not happy Jan!). I tend to use the analogue sticks for accel & brake, with the triggers as up/down gear. On the X-Box I prefer to use the triggers as accel & brake, but I just can't do it with the PS3 controller.
Totally agree. It's more than just a game with a decent wheel. I use the Logitech G25, 900 wheel rotation, 6 speed gated shifter, and clutch. No assists. Usually drive without any ABS. For online time trials sometimes will use ABS = 1, but will do my set up with ABS off first. I love the cockpit views and even change the side my shifter is on (or use paddles) to match the vehicle. Best thing I ever bought!
I hate triggers for accel/brake. I'm right stick all the way, have been ever since the PS1 got an analog controller! I find the triggers aren't sensitive enough...having said that, stick isn't much better, but heaps more comfortable for me. I use L2/R2 for shifting, L1 for rear view and R1 for lights... Pretty much don't use shape buttons...only handbrake in drifting
Been researching this topic across many forums and it would appear that it is advantageous to use a wheel. At one point, people were even saying it was near impossible to Bronze the Vettel challenge with a DS3, until of course PD pushed out the times. So if it is 'fact' (and I am not saying it is) that you will achieve better lap times with a wheel, should we then look at perhaps splitting Div 1 into 'wheel' & 'DS3'? I think that the top half dozen in Div 1 are all wheel users, though that is not to say they wouldn't be there if they were using a DS3. People might say I am having a whinge cause I am in the bottom half of the division, or that as a DS3 user if I'm not happy, to go buy a wheel. That's not it at all. I'm just looking for a level playing field, and I just feel that on some tracks it doesn't matter how much you practise or how good you are, as a DS3 user you can't compete with those with a wheel. I'm just looking for other people's opinions and some 'mature' discussion on the subject, that's all. I love this league and will continue to support it no matter what
Its not always true that the wheel is faster. It depends on the track, the car, and the tyres. With the racing soft tyres there is much more parity. Even more parity with low hp and soft tyres. I was stuggling to gold the "sebastian leob snow challenge" with my wheel. Got gold almost straight away when i used the ds3. This is just an opinion and an example.
the only reason i'd buy a wheel is to get throttle control. So many times, i've spun out (or come close to) on a corner because the DS3 just doesn't offer the amount of control a pedal would. It becomes a problem on slow tracks where there's lots of slow corners.
I see the argument for splitting into controller and wheel users...but it would be too hard to police I think. I plan on getting a wheel (eventually...when my budget allows for it!!) and will hopefully reap the rewards. I just think it is too much work to split everyone up like that...on some tracks, Monaco GP as a good example, I think wheels do definitely have an advantage. I KNOW I could do a 1:31, but the controller just doesn't have the sensitivity to allow for the subtle throttle and steering you need around the principality. I'll keep plugging away with my DS3...looks like I'm heading down to Div 2 possibly anyway, LOL, maybe I'll stop complaining without Beau and Koastr and JC destroying me every race
Aww crap, I'll have to pick up my game then Leeboy. See ya next season I am enjoying the game so much more since getting a wheel, throttle control is a god-send. Easily 1 - 1.5 seconds quicker on most tracks in the Supra this season.
When I used a Contoller I used the X And O buttons for accelerate and brake. And the D pad for steering. Best thing about getting a wheel was that I no longer get a sore thumb holding down the throttle.
Leeboy, can I ask what's stopping you getting a wheel? Is it $$, or something else? Maybe you have you eyes set on a more expensive one? For someone who seems to love this game (and racing in general) so much, it just seems strange after 6 months you still haven't invested in a wheel.
@JC Mainly money, I know they aren't expensive in relative terms, but I'm not exactly rolling in cash and bills and the like come first. I've been playing Gran Turismo and F1 on the Playstation since I got my PS1 back in 1995, and have always used a controller. I don't think it's been worth getting a wheel until now, with the advent of realistic physics and force feedback etc. I will get one eventually and hopefully be rubbing bumpers with yourself and Beau, Koastr and Outta...
Don't rub my bumper, might get germs. Also, only $140 for DFGT http://dicksmith.com.au/product/YG2331/ ... g-force-gt Or keep saving your pennies for the $500 wheels.
