You don't get formally drafted into a team, are not added to one of the team private chats and are free to run whatever livery you like. In reality, privateers can be drafted into one of the teams, they just don't know it. That allows teams to earn points towards the teams' championship from their results and allows them to be nominated as a joker (double points).
the only difference is you don't get added to the team chats most people who pick privateer want to run their own liveries and do their own thing for the season
