(taken from ninemsn) A driver has suffered broken bones and injured his back after a dust cloud caused a terrifying three-car crash in the Formula 3 in Austria. The carnage began when American driver Ryan Tveter flew off the road at turn five during the Red Bull Ring Formula Three European Championship in Spielberg. However, the 21-year-old's race was seemingly saved by the gravel trap which slowed his momentum and pushed him back out on to the track. But the off-road excursion also kicked up a huge dust cloud that covered the track and hid Tveter's now stationary car from the rest of the field. And it was through this hazard that Chinese driver Peter Li Zhi Cong emerged at a blistering speed. With no time to react, Li smashed into the back of Tveter's car and hurtled into a horrifying airborne barrel roll as both cars disintegrated on impact. Tveter was then knocked into the path of Pedro Piquet, who clipped the back of his rival's car and was nearly launched into the air himself. Both Li and Tveter were rushed to hospital with the Chinese driver airlifted for potential head and back injuries. A team statement later said Li had sustained broken bones in his foot and four fractured vertebrae. Tveter was taken by ambulance for a precautionary scan while Piquet escaped unharmed. The mammoth shunt brought out a red flag with Brit Callum Ilott taking out the victory.
