Remember that the upstream pipe can be 1Gb or 10Gb, which means the many small chunks will be queued before your GT packet (depending on TCP window size, that many people tuned high back in the days of low adsl speeds), while waiting to flow down the tiny last mile link. Without packet QoS, it's just FIFO. Means more lag. MTU isn't the cure when you have high bandwidth feeding into lower bandwidth.
