With MTU of most internet connections being 1492 or below, each packet ( or chunk of data ) sent and received is no larger than that, so even a 10MB email message is recieved in 7028 small chunks, and chunks of game data has to try to fit in amongst that. At 10mbps your router would have to deal with over 800 of those chunks per second, and work out which ones go to your computer and which ones go to your PS3.

Remember that the upstream pipe can be 1Gb or 10Gb, which means the many small chunks will be queued before your GT packet (depending on TCP window size, that many people tuned high back in the days of low adsl speeds), while waiting to flow down the tiny last mile link. Without packet QoS, it's just FIFO. Means more lag. MTU isn't the cure when you have high bandwidth feeding into lower bandwidth.

And also if a queue becomes full, UDP packets are the 1st to be dropped.

and wouldn't that be fun, when most peering game data is UDP :)

Disconnecting anything else from the home network, wired and wifi will always help. All PCs, laptops, phones, tablets, smart TVs (even some fridges)

Doesnt stop your PS3 from having to share the internet connection with other devices, it just means your router has less processing to do for traffic going to your PS3.

it seems hanging back from someone who is lagging is an easier option.

when you don't know if its your fault or not is even more frustrating, i mean how can i host a street room tuesday and then not get a clean signal on race night

It is, but how much effort do you want to put into it? :p
In general, it is difficult to know at that point in time why there is a problem, so it's better to eliminate as many potential issues as possible. I could log all traffic and analyse it, but there are easier fixes than that :)

That's what I did still didn't stop me from being SMACKED. kinda makes the rest of the the race very frustrating to the point of giving up. Especially when you have lost so many places then have to wait until lagger is gone or stopped lagging by then most of the interest of trying to catch up is basically gone:cool:

Lag is the last of my problems at the moment. As you all know I lost power big time last race. Struggled all the way until lap 10 when I kicked the ____ out of my throttle and it came good. 3 laps of full power.. Now that's Frustrating..
As suggested I have dismantled and cleaned the Pontentiometer (G27 Throttle Pot) but I really not sure its going to last long as it was all loose compared to the brake and the clutch Pontentiometer . Ill be looking into replacing it
