There's been a bit of discussion about iRacing around the forum and I would be very interested to hear from guys who've got involved with it.

I've played rFactor a bit and quite enjoy it, but miss the graphics, huge range of cars and the fun of easy customising that GT5 offers.

How does it compare with rFactor physics/graphics/effects etc?
How does it compare with rFactor/GT5 for playablility? i.e. rFactor takes a bit more setup vs GT5 where it's easy to just jump in a get racing.
Does the subscription and additional fees for DLC cars/tracks feel like value for money?
A two year subscription is $179 so I'd want to be pretty keen on playing it regularly to get bang for those bucks. Plus I'd have to think about upgrading my PC. I can meet most of the specs except my processer is an old single core 2.4GHZ.

Well we've all heard the iRacing physics are second-to-none but how's the rest of the game?
I've heard the graphics and visual damage models are a bit lacking, and there's no dynamic environments (time/weather).

Have you tried rFactor? Physics are great, it's hell cheap (about $60 one off DLC purchase), has dymanic environments, it's more than likely you can run it without upgrading your PC, new cars and tracks are free DLC from rFactorcentral. The downside is none of the content is licensed, so the 'true-to-life' quality is variable.
rFactor2 is in the pipeline and should compete with GT5 in terms of graphics and visual effects, not to mention improved tyre modelling including flat spots and visual tyre degradation to reflect the actual wear pattern (inside/outside heavy, flat spot etc.)

Not sure whether to get involved with iRacing or hang out for rFactor2?
Stonemonkey, Joe90, where are you guys (or anyone else) at?! Give us your feedback!

ive had a look at iracing, im not prepared to pay that much for a game.
rfactor is good (i love v8factor)but i cant get my head around the setups i normally run midfield.
im holding out for rfactor2 when ever it comes out if it comes out.

$179 is very cheap for a 2 year subscription. Consider how much you would spend on other games over a 2 year period. I have never played iracing though, so i can't comment on what you get for your $179.

Yea, but after 2 years It will cost you another $179 (or whatever depending on the subscription period) to keep playing. Any other games I've purchased for half that money I've generally played for a fair bit longer than just two years. Hell I even played prologue for nearly that long.

Plus with the iRacing this is just the base cost with which you get 6 cars and about 9 tracks.
Every car and track thereafter has to be purchased at approx $11 - $15 depending on what you buy. Discounts are there for bulk purchasing but sh**t some people have spend over $300 to get everything they wanted, and that figure will keep going up the longer you play. Seems like alot to me....especially if the graphics and environments aren't really that great looking. I do like the idea of the user safety rating system as part of career tracking and advancement.

I've read that it can cost you up too $500 if you want all tracks and cars. But I'm not really put off by the money. The "simulation" factor is what I'm looking for. Also, some of the best sim racers in the world are competing on iRacing (and rFactor no doubt). I'm all for the challenge, I want to put myself in the most competitive community there is.

I've been on iracing the last couple of weeks and I really love it.

Sure it could be expensive to get everything, but with the seasons an series system you will probably only want a few cars and tracks at any one time. Also fully half of that extra content is oval racing stuff, which i will probably never need.

The licensing system is great. As long as you only increase your safety rating. At first I was driving badly and my rating went down; I ended up in races with a lot of bad drivers. However after getting my rating back up so that I was put in events with better drivers im having a blast. Its a great feeling to go wheel to wheel for several laps and be sure that your opponent wont try to take you out or slam you in the rear because they don't know how to be passed.

Still, as a game it really does limit you. Rookies can only drive certain things, and at any one time competition is only available on certain tracks, which change weekly.

Certainly worth the 12 bucks for a month trial, IMO, and if you sign up for longer use my gmail (davisjess) address in the referral field

I'm Jesse Davis2 on the system, btw.

    Cool, nice feedback Darth, Thanks.

I do like the idea that the ranking system is all tied into the game and managed by the developers rather than individual communities, and that this system incorporates the safety rating to promote proper racing etiquette. I guess that's part of what you're paying for, but it nice to know whether it feels worth it or not. Cheers.

I might get the trial sometime, even just to see if it will run on my old system (2.4GHZ Pentium, 2.5GB RAM, nVidia7600GS). I can run rFactor OK but not at full graphics.

I read on the website you can get the 1 month trial for $5 if you quote PR-FIVEDOLLAR in the promo code field.

So have you played rFactor as well?

I watched an interview with the makers of Forza 4 on simracingtonight youtube channel. He wouldn't say his game was better than GT5 just said he played all games from all makers and liked GT5. The guys testing Forza 4 said it felt better than Forza3 with the force feed back being improved and the tyre modelling much improved and closer to but not as good as Iracing's. But with Forza 4 you still have to pay $80+ a year for internet access, so makes Iracing still look ok.

Heres the web site, its a good show for everything sim racing and Jessica Lopez is a big assets to the show or should I say has a couple of big assets.

Hehe nice. Mad, surely you've driven rFactor, how does iRacing compare there?
I guess when I upgrade my PC and get an iRacing account I can see for myself....

I played rFactor for a year and that was what initially drew me away from PS3. But rFactor to me now feels quite out dated... The car doesn't feel like it "grips" the road as such, the tyres just feel like big blocks (although it is still better than GT5's feel). rFactor's graphics are not that good, but physics wise it still isn't bad. But it depends on the mod, some mods are definitely better than others.

Although iRacing is heaps more expensive, it is probably the best racing sim I can think of on the market at the moment. The physics are great, the tyres actually feel like tyres (Will be even better on the new tyre model that comes out in 2 or 3 days time). Everything is laser scanned, car models and tracks. So they are near perfect. Yes you do pay for it.... But it is a very complete package.

Plus the netcode is heaps better, in iRacing the lag is minimal compared to anything else i've played. Even when playing on US servers with a ping of 333ms it isn't that bad.

Nice, thanks for that Mad. Yea agreed, the quality of rFactor mods is pretty variable, making the iRacing licensed and more detailed models quite appealling. I'm pretty sold based on what I've read, and that review really seals the deal.
New PC rig here I come.... :p

The more I play iracing, the more I discover how good it really is. Drove a Chev Impala around Daytona for the first time last night. It made driving the nascars in gt5 feel like compete arcade machines. I was amazed at how detailed the daytona track felt. In gt5 it's so easy to just hold it flat. In iracing, every single bump or camber change in the road wants to throw you into a death spin.

Yea I was pretty dissappointed with the GT5 NASCARS, waaaay to easy to drive (arcade machines is spot on)
And I'm sure it's another level of fun and challenge going from rFactor to iRacing NASCAR with the detailed track surface modelling...

If I get to the store in time, I will put in my order for the new PC today! :D
